Georgeta Fondos received her MFA from Florida Atlantic University in 2008. She immigrated to the US in 2003 after receiving an arts education in Fine Arts with specialization in Fiber Arts at schools in Moldova, Romania, and Greece. Her training in Fiber Arts allows her to create work that challenges the
traditional forms of weaving and painting. The weaving’s warps and wefts are metaphorically transposed into a vocabulary that consists of the implications of more layers of silk, polyester, cotton, or burlap.
Using the flame as a tool, Georgeta experiments with singeing and scorching various textiles. The matchstick’s flame is being directed to “draw”, “paint”, and “sculpt” elegant three-dimensional forms that evoke ideas of change, transformation, destruction, and loss. Metaphorically, at the level of human condition, she sees burning as a force that produces emotional excitement and agitation, but also discomfort, pain, and suffering.
Georgeta Fondos has shown her artwork in group exhibitions including Gallery Camino Real, Boca Raton; Brevard Art Museum, Melbourne; Art Serve, Fort Lauderdale; and Schmidt Gallery at Florida Atlantic University. She has also been selected to create site-specific installations for several exhibitions, curated by Kara Walker-Tomé, such as Showtel and 10 x10. In 2009 Georgeta was awarded her first public art project – the Dome in Rotunda Painting at the Lauderhill City Hall.
